The short answer
Most high-end range problems, such as burners that won't ignite, ovens that won't heat, and error codes, come from a single worn part that can be replaced. On a well-built Wolf, Viking or Thermador range, repair is usually the practical choice unless the cooktop or oven cavity is badly damaged or the replacement parts are no longer available.
Professional-style ranges are built to last, but igniters, gas valves, sensors, fans and control boards still wear out over time. Wolf Appliance Services repairs Wolf, Viking and Thermador ranges and rangetops in San Jose and nearby cities such as Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Campbell, Cupertino, Los Gatos and Milpitas. We work on all-gas, dual-fuel and induction models. We are an independent repair company and are not affiliated with any appliance manufacturer. This page covers the problems we see most often, what our technician checks, how the brands differ, and how to decide whether a repair makes sense for your kitchen.
Issues we fix
These are the symptoms homeowners describe most often when they ask about range repair. Several of them can have more than one cause, so the diagnosis matters more than the symptom.
If you smell gas, turn off the burners if you can do so safely, leave the house, and call PG&E or 911 from outside. Do not use a gas range that smells of gas until it has been checked.
- Burners that click but won't light, or keep clicking after the flame is lit
- Burners with no spark at all
- Weak, yellow, lifting or uneven flames
- Simmer burners that won't hold a low flame or go out on low
- Oven that is slow to preheat or doesn't heat at all
- Oven temperature that runs hot or cold, or bakes unevenly
- Broiler that won't light or won't heat
- Convection fan that is noisy, slow or not spinning
- Error codes, a blank display, or controls that don't respond
- Self-clean that won't start, or an oven door that stays locked
- Door that won't close tightly, worn gaskets or sagging hinges
- Induction zones that don't detect the pan or shut off mid-cook

What our technician checks on a built-in or professional-style range
Professional-style ranges have more components than standard ranges, and their parts are heavier and more tightly packed. Our technician starts by confirming the symptom with you, then tests the range under normal operation instead of guessing from the complaint alone.
On the cooktop, that means checking the spark igniters, spark module, burner caps and ports, gas valves and simmer function. In the oven, the technician checks the igniter or bake and broil elements, the temperature sensor, convection fan and motor, door switch, latch and gaskets. On dual-fuel and induction models, the technician also checks the control board, wiring connections and any stored error codes. On rangetops and slide-in units fitted into custom cabinetry, the technician checks how the unit is supported and how much access there is, because that affects how the repair is carried out.
How Wolf, Viking and Thermador ranges differ
Wolf ranges, both all-gas and dual-fuel, use sealed dual-stacked burners. Common service calls involve spark igniters, spark modules, oven igniters and convection fan motors. On dual-fuel models, failed temperature sensors and control boards are also common causes of heating problems and error codes.
Viking ranges have a long history in home kitchens, so we see a wide range of ages and designs. Ignition switches, oven igniters, thermostats and door hinges are frequent repairs. On older units, parts availability can become an issue.
Thermador ranges are known for their star-shaped burners and very low simmer settings. Repairs often involve spark modules, simmer function problems, oven control boards and convection fans.
Sub-Zero makes refrigerators, freezers and wine storage rather than ranges. Many kitchens we visit pair a Sub-Zero refrigerator with a Wolf range, and we repair both.

Repair or replace a high-end range?
A Wolf, Viking or Thermador range is a major purchase, and the body, burners and oven cavity are built to outlast the parts that usually fail. If the fault is an igniter, sensor, valve, fan or control board, repair is usually the sensible choice.
Replacement deserves a closer look when the oven cavity or cooktop is cracked or heavily corroded, when several major components are failing together, or when the parts you need are discontinued. Replacing a built-in range can also mean adjusting cabinetry, the countertop, the hood, or the gas and electrical connections. Our technician will tell you plainly what is wrong and which option makes sense for your range.
What affects the cost of range repair
We give you a cost after diagnosis, once we know the actual fault. Several factors shape that cost:
- The fault itself: an igniter is a simpler job than a gas valve or control board
- Parts: brand-specific parts vary widely in cost and availability
- Fuel type: dual-fuel and induction models involve more electronics than all-gas ranges
- Access: rangetops and slide-in ranges set into custom cabinetry or stone counters can take longer to pull out safely
- Model age: older units may need parts sourced from more than one supplier
How a range repair visit works
When you contact us, we ask for the brand, model number if you have it, and a description of the problem. The model and serial label is usually behind the kickplate, under the cooktop, or inside the oven door frame.
At the visit, the technician confirms the symptom, tests the range and explains what has failed. You approve the work before any repair starts. Common parts can often be replaced the same day. If a part has to be ordered, we schedule a return visit once it arrives. Before leaving, the technician tests the range again with you so you can see that it works.
